Getting a Georgia medical marijuana card involves a physician evaluation followed by a separate state registry and card process. Your physician decides whether certification is medically appropriate; Georgia Department of Public Health verifies the registry submission and issues the state card. Booking a consultation does not guarantee certification or card issuance.

How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Georgia: The Steps

  1. Check Georgia’s qualifying conditions and gather relevant medical information.

  2. Book your $100 GMMC consultation on Calendly.

  3. Receive the eVisit link from our team and attend your private phone consultation.

  4. If certification is appropriate, the physician completes the required certification and registry submission.

  5. Follow Georgia DPH’s instructions if it requests more information or sends a state payment notice.

  6. Pay the separate state card fee when instructed and receive your Georgia Medical Cannabis card.

The appointment and state process serve different purposes. The physician evaluates your individual circumstances. Georgia DPH handles verification and card issuance. Completing one step does not guarantee completion of the next.

Who Can Apply for a Georgia Medical Cannabis Card?

Only a Georgia resident with a qualifying medical condition may be eligible under the state's eligibility criteria for the medical cannabis program. A fully licensed physician whose principal practice is in Georgia must evaluate the patient and exercise independent medical judgment.

GMMC offers consultations to adults age 18 and older statewide. You do not need to live near Stockbridge or Atlanta to book our private phone consultation.

The statewide program has separate provisions for certain minors and caregivers. GMMC's service is adults-only. A caregiver arrangement, legal guardian, or legal custodian does not change our adult consultation scope.

A diagnosis alone does not guarantee certification for qualifying patients. The physician reviews the qualifying category, your medical history, current condition, and available supporting information before determining whether certification is appropriate.

Step 1: Review Georgia’s Qualifying Conditions

Georgia’s current patient guidance lists 18 qualifying categories and qualifying medical conditions for cannabis use. These include cancer except non-metastatic skin cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, adult autism spectrum disorder, epidermolysis bullosa, hospice care, stage III HIV/AIDS, inflammatory bowel disease, intractable pain, lupus, mitochondrial disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, severe peripheral neuropathy, adult post traumatic stress disorder resulting from direct exposure to or witnessing trauma, specified seizure disorders, sickle cell disease, and Tourette’s syndrome.

Medical conditions like PTSD and crohn's disease qualify for medical cannabis, and patients in a hospice program may also qualify based on current state guidance. Seizure disorders include those related to epilepsy or trauma-related head injuries. A general pain complaint, a symptom, or a condition outside the listed categories should not be assumed eligible.

Some older websites attach severe or end-stage restrictions to conditions that current Georgia DPH guidance lists differently. Use the current qualifying category and physician review rather than relying on an outdated search result.

Review our qualifying condition pages for general education. The physician makes the decision for your particular case.

Step 2: Prepare Your Medical History and Available Records

Prepare accurate information about your condition, how it affects your daily life, and your current treatment. Follow the appointment instructions for any requested medical history or records. Relevant information may include prior diagnoses, clinic notes, diagnostic reports, and a medication list.

You do not need to select records based on whether they make approval seem more likely. Provide an accurate account of your diagnosis, treatment, and symptoms so the licensed Georgia physician can assess your circumstances.

Useful preparation includes:

  • Your diagnosed condition and when it was diagnosed

  • Current symptoms and their effect on daily activities

  • Current medicines, supplements, and treatments

  • Relevant prior evaluations or specialist information

  • Available medical records or diagnostic reports

  • Prior cannabis use for medical use, benefits, side effects, or concerns, if relevant

  • Questions you want to discuss during the consultation

  • Current contact and mailing information

The exact records needed vary by patient. Ask our team for the appropriate secure submission process if medical records are requested. Do not send medical records, patient identifiers, or sensitive health information through public website chat.

Having records available helps the physician understand your medical history. It does not guarantee that the physician will certify you.

Step 3: Book Your GMMC Telemedicine Appointment

Use our Calendly booking link to complete your appointment schedule and choose an available time. The GMMC appointment is a private 15-minute phone consultation with a Georgia-licensed physician.

After you book, our team sends the eVisit link for your telemedicine visit, and evaluations can be scheduled via secure telehealth platforms. Payment is collected through eVisit after the visit. Calendly is used for scheduling rather than consultation payment collection.

Check the contact information you provide and review the appointment instructions. Keep your phone available at the scheduled time and choose a private setting where you can discuss your medical history.

For booking assistance or a general question, contact GMMC. Public website chat should be used for general questions, not medical records.

GMMC's $100 consultation fee covers the physician evaluation for the consultation service. The state card fee, online state processing fee, and any later cannabis purchase are separate. View the full pricing breakdown.

Step 4: Complete the Physician Evaluation

The physician reviews your medical history, current condition, qualifying diagnosis, and available supporting information. The evaluation is an opportunity to discuss whether medical cannabis certification is medically appropriate for you.

Georgia medical marijuana doctors must be fully licensed physicians with a principal practice location in Georgia. Under the program rules, these evaluations may be performed by one of the state's licensed doctors. The required physician-patient relationship and independent clinical assessment cannot be replaced by a website checklist or payment.

During the consultation, the physician may discuss your diagnosis, existing care, relevant safety concerns, and the state certification process to determine whether you may access medical cannabis through that process. Be ready to ask questions and explain your current medicines or treatment.

If you use the term medical marijuana doctor or licensed medical marijuana doctor when searching, remember that the relevant requirement is a fully licensed Georgia physician who meets the state program requirements. The website does not determine eligibility.

Physicians are not required to certify every patient. Paying for or completing a medical evaluation does not require the physician to provide certification.

If You Do Not Qualify

If our physician determines that you do not qualify for medical cannabis certification, GMMC refunds any consultation fee paid. This is a physician consultation service; there is no merchandise to return or replace.

Read our consultation refund policy. The consultation refund does not cover separate state charges or cannabis purchases from another business.

If Certification Is Appropriate

The physician completes the required Medical Cannabis Certification and uploads the necessary information and documentation into the Medical Cannabis Patient Registry. Follow the physician's instructions for any required certification or consent documents, including a low thc oil waiver if one is required as part of the certification or registry process.

Certification is not a prescription. It also does not mean that the state has already completed verification or issued your physical medical cannabis card.

Step 5: Follow the Georgia Department of Public Health Process

Georgia DPH manages the Medical Cannabis Patient Registry and reviews submissions under Georgia law and applicable state law before issuing the card. After the physician submits the required information, the department checks the submission for accuracy and completeness.

If additional documentation or clarification is needed, Georgia DPH contacts the patient or caregiver. Respond using the instructions supplied by the department rather than sending sensitive information through an unrelated public form.

Once information is verified, the department sends payment instructions for the state card. Follow the state notice for your particular application. The time before state payment varies with scheduling, physician review, and registry verification.

The physician evaluation, initial certification, registry verification, state payment, and card delivery are separate steps. A completed consultation is not the same as having an issued Georgia medical card.

Identification and Georgia Residency

Georgia DPH requires current identification and proof of Georgia residency. Check that your identification is not expired and that your address information is accurate.

A current Georgia driver's license or Georgia state-issued identification card can establish identity and residency when it shows the current address. Other accepted identification, such as a passport, military ID, or out-of-state ID, requires additional proof of Georgia residency.

An additional residency document must show the cardholder's full name and street address. Examples include a utility bill, phone bill, or pay stub.

Use the official Georgia DPH patient guidance for current documentation requirements. Ask the physician or our team about the secure process for supplying requested information.

An identification document, medical diagnosis, or prior card does not independently guarantee certification or state verification.

Step 6: Pay the Separate State Card Fee

The Georgia Department of Public Health charges $33.75 for card processing for one patient or caregiver card, including the $30 state card fee and a $3.75 online service fee. Ask providers to explain their consultation charges and any hidden fees before booking; state fees are separate.

For one certified patient receiving one card and paying online, the combined GMMC consultation and state costs are:

A Georgia medical marijuana card costs $33.75 to process online, preserving the same $30 fee plus $3.75 online service fee. The $100 consultation does not include state fees or medical cannabis products. An eligible caregiver card is a separate card with a separate state charge.

If you cannot use the online payment portal or do not have email access, Georgia DPH describes an alternative $30 money-order payment process. Follow its current instructions.

DPH requires payment within 60 days after the payment notice, and the online payment is sent through a secure link in the state notice. If the deadline is missed, the card request may be canceled and the cardholder may need to contact the physician about reinstatement.

Step 7: Receive Your Medical Cannabis Card

Georgia DPH advises allowing up to 10 business days after state payment processing for delivery. That estimate does not include appointment scheduling, the physician evaluation, registry submission, or verification.

The state sends the card through UPS to the mailing address on file, and a signature is required. Patients who use a P.O. box, do not have an appropriate mailing address, or do not have a secure mailing address should follow the department's instructions to pick up their card at a county health department.

Confirm your mailing address before card shipment. If your information changes, notify the physician or Georgia DPH about the applicable update process.

Your GA medical card is legal proof that you can legally possess low-THC oil in Georgia through the state program. It does not authorize every form of cannabis, unrestricted possession, home cultivation, or activity outside Georgia's rules.

Purchasing Medical Cannabis After Card Issuance

Eligible registered patients and caregivers must follow Georgia's active-card and purchase requirements when buying from licensed dispensaries or authorized independent pharmacies. The Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission provides current information about licensed dispensaries and authorized independent pharmacies, where patients must purchase low-THC products and other approved medical marijuana products.

GMMC provides a physician consultation and certification assessment. We do not include cannabis products with the appointment or sell merchandise through this consultation service.

Current Georgia DPH guidance states a possession limit of 12,000 milligrams of THC. Older references to the Low THC Oil Registry, low THC oil program, or a low THC oil card may describe the earlier program name and outdated limits.

Check the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission for current product and seller information. In Georgia, medical marijuana legal access operates through the state's medical framework, and a card does not permit smoking cannabis or home cultivation. Recreational marijuana use remains illegal in Georgia.

State program participation also does not settle every question about federal law, employment testing, travel, or legal protections. Seek advice relevant to your circumstances rather than treating a card as blanket legal protection.

Annual Certification and Five-Year Card Renewal

The physical Georgia Medical Cannabis card is valid for five years. Georgia generally requires annual physician certification, but SB 220 (2026), page 22, exempts patients with incurable or irreversible conditions. Confirm with your certifying physician or Georgia DPH whether the exception applies to your documented condition and registry record.

These are separate timelines. For patients subject to annual certification, a five-year card does not eliminate that requirement. Annual certification does not automatically produce a new physical card.

Check your certification date and the expiration date printed on the card. Allow time for scheduling, physician review, and any state processing before your next required step.

The renewal process includes reassessment of continued eligibility and any necessary registry updates. Prior certification does not guarantee recertification.

Review renewal and annual certification. The Georgia DPH program page describes the general annual certification process.

Caregivers and Adults-Only GMMC Consultations

The state may issue separate cards to eligible caregivers. Each issued patient or caregiver card has its own state fee.

Caregiver arrangements depend on the patient's circumstances and the state's current requirements. A legal guardian or legal custodian should follow the applicable official process.

GMMC's consultation service is for adults age 18 and older. General information about severe autism in minors or pediatric categories does not mean GMMC offers pediatric consultations.
